Death In EarthBound - by Ultimoo

Death In EarthBound

These opening sentences may have nothing to do with EarthBound but I assure you it will tie-in to the EarthBound related segments of the article. Anyone who is a regular in the #earthbound chatroom on IRC is well familiar with my passion for the sport of wrestling, collectively. This past Sunday one of the most talented and entertaining wrestlers ever to exist in the world of professional wrestling died in a tragic accident which was very sorrowful, and very, very real. That will explain to you the edgieness of my last article, which was chock full of bad grammar and poor writing. I wrote it during the beautifully done tribute to Owen Hart the night following his death. It was the first time I shed a tear since I was really, really young. And as much as some of you may despise wrestling, I guarantee almost any one human being would be affected by this tribute.

Everyone including myself has been gradually getting over it. Death is perhaps the epitome of the dark side of human nature. But where is the element of death to be found in our beloved game, EarthBound?? There is only one important death that I can recall. And that of course is at the very genesis of the game, when Buzz Buzz experiences a very dramatic (and very humorous I might add) passing. Now the way I see it, EarthBound 64 can be much more dramatic and serious with the subject of death since the N64 is proposed to a more mature audience as of late. Speaking of which guess what's not listed in Pak Watch in this month's Nintendo Power?? I'm telling everybody right now, the staff, the members, and the general readers of this article, should EarthBound 64 be cancelled, my future as article guy will be self-jeapordized.

Think of someone in EarthBound who is very old, very important, and very likeable/memorable that has death potential in EarthBound 64. I think you can see where I'm going with that idea specifically so I won't go into detail. This is a picture perfect example of why EarthBound is such a great source of escapism. It's a wonderful adventure of hope, glory, and friendship that involves all the trials and tribulations of your everyday RPG epic, but is not by any means subject to the dark and overly serious (i.e. Xenogears) overtones of recent RPGs. When your HP drops to 0 in Dragon Warrior, the original console RPG, you die. It says right in the text, "Thou art dead." As for EarthBound?? Unconcious and immediately transported to the nearest hospital. Go figure, another untouched aspect of EarthBound. Rest in peace, Owen Hart. You will be missed by many. Even more so than Buzz Buzz.
