After writing all of this backstory, I realized that, in adhering to the “mother-dominant” theme of the game, Itoi probably intended for George and Maria to be Ninten’s ancestors on his *mother’s* side, not his father’s. Whoops. Oh well, I guess it’s no big deal. |

That whole business about Suzannah getting run over by a drunk driver… well, I worried about that. Not because I thought it was too “adult” a theme, but because I suddenly remembered about Prohibition (even though there was still a lot of bootlegging going on during that time anyway), but then I did the math, and chalked up the accident to take place in 1918, two years before Prohibition became a stateside thing. Phew, close call! But THEN, I worried that a Model-T Ford might not have been powerful enough to kill anyone. So I looked it up, and apparently that model was capable of going at excesses of 30 mph, which I don’t doubt is fast enough for a reckless drunk driver to plow over a helpless pedestrian. I hate having to research history. |

Sometimes I feel a little awkward when I write characters doing, with ease, something I have immense difficulty with in real life. In this case, it's having a phone conversation. I have (just the image of being handed the receiver makes me shudder), and speaking to members of my own family is still no exception. Yeah, I know, I'm a psychiatrist's dream patient. On another note, I knew this page and the next few were going to come out looking one-sided, even while I was doing the sketches for them a good year and a half ago, because we hear (well, read) both ends of the phone line, but only see Ninten's side. So I tried my best to make the visuals the least bit boring as possible without distracting from the dialogue, by making Ninten fidget and make an occasional face. And there's also going to be some visual flashbacks coming up, so Ninten won't have to be in every single frame. |

That last panel originally just had Ninten's mom saying "I realize now that YOU are the boy in my dream," but then as I went to draw over the sketch, I decided that I needed to be more subtle, and yet more thorough as well, so I changed it so that Mom only implies what's obvious to the reader and Ninten, and goes in depth instead on what led her to her realization. |

I'm pretty sure I wasn't thinking straight when I made it so that Mom stays off the phone the whole time and just stands there while Ninten jabbers off to Dad. After what the family just went through, she should have shoved Ninten off the phone the moment she became aware of who was on the other line. What kind of mother is she? |
