Personal Theories of Mother

The Super-Mega-Ultra, All-Inclusive, Semi-Plausible Explanation to What Actually Might Be Going on in That Crazy, Mixed-Up Mother Universe
As presented by Jason Chandler (a.k.a. JaydeWizard)

All great explanations always start at the beginning, and what better place to start than the beginning of the series, Mother 1. Furthermore, what better place to start answering questions than the beginning of the beginning. Ergo, it is best to start at the opening prologue to the story.

***For the benefit of semantics, “Earthbound Zero” shall refer to the NES version of the game, and “Earthbound” shall refer to the SNES version of the game. Also, the prevalent alien entity shall be referred to as Giygas.***

Mystery Number 1: What is this “stolen information/technology” that George returned to Earth with?
This question has many possible answers. The most obvious choices are: The knowledge of PSI, or the fact that the lullaby Maria sang to Giygas made him angry/hurt him.
Logically, it is possible to rule out the theory that the answer is the song. Why? Giygas did not become angry towards humans until after George stole the information from the race Giygas was a part of. Why would George feel the need to escape and fly all the way back to Earth when, at the time, Giygas’ race felt no ill-will towards humans? One can assume that Giygas felt betrayed only after George left, thereby ruling out the theory that the song is the information.

Another possible answer that supports PSI being the information stolen is that Giygas states that George “betrayed” his people. Perhaps Giygas, or Giygas’ race, bestowed the knowledge of PSI on George and Maria as a gift for raising Giygas. When George left, the Giygans felt betrayed that this gift, that was meant for George and Maria alone, was going to be given to other humans. Perhaps Giygas felt that George did not respect the fact that the information was a gift and thus, felt betrayed.

Mystery Number 2: What Happened to Maria?
Once George left with the information of PSI, Giygas’ race became outraged. Maria, who stayed behind, possibly because she did not want to leave Giygas, was caught in the immediately outburst of anger. Giygas’ race was now under the impression that all humans were liars and betrayers, and since Maria was the first human they encountered, one can only imagine the wrath brought down upon her. Her mortal body destroyed, her spiritual essence was cast into a fantasy realm, known as Magicant. Maria knew that Giygas’ race would stop at nothing to make the humans repay for George’s unforgivable act of betrayal, so from her mystical realm of Magicant, she sent the one thing she knew would be Earth’s only hope in the coming conflict: the lullaby she used to sing to Giygas. Her memories were stored in those eight pieces of song she cast out onto the world, so she forgot herself, and where she had come from. She eventually became Queen Maria. All she knew was that the songs should be brought together again to combat the menace that lurked beyond the stars. When those songs were combined, the time would be right to strike against the invaders.

Mystery Number 3: Is Gigue from Earthbound Zero the same as Giygas from Earthbound?
Yes. After the final battle with Ninten, “Gigue” announces that he will return, and seek revenge against the earth/Ninten and once again attempt to take over. The reason for the difference in names is purely a NOA translation inconsistency. When Mother 2 was translated for a U.S. release the Mother 1 translation was all but forgotten, so the name Giygas was given to the alien invader. (Americans had never even known about an English Mother 1, so why would we argue with the name “Giygas?”) Only after rediscovering the long lost Mother 1 translation did we learn his American name was originally “Giegue.”

Mystery Number 4: What’s with the XX on the tombstone?
There is a slight chance that this does indeed represent the chromosomes that equal a female. Perhaps it is indeed a sign. It probably doesn’t mean “wherever you see this, know that you’re protected” because it’s on the chest-plate of the robot EVE fights.

Mystery Number 5: Is Tony gay?
Who cares one way or another?

Mystery Number 6: The Hieroglyphs in Scaraba (or Summers, if you want to be picky) say that the Earth is invaded every 1000 years. Is it the Giygans?
In an attempt to connect the two stories, and still manage to retain some sense of realistic logic-making, and not sound like I am just saying stuff to be funny, let’s assume that the invaders are, in fact, the Giygans. Let’s look at it this way: Let’s say that at the time when the Earth was attacked last, at the height of the Scaraban Empire, the Earth was attacked by the Giygans. Well, according to the hieroglyphs, the Scarabans lost, yet the Gods of Scaraba protected the Pyramids and the invaders were driven off. Now, 1000 years later, the Giygans come back and abduct George and Maria. Perhaps it was a test. Certainly the Giygans would have had a reason for invading Earth in the first place (1000years prior), and if they came back, they would have just wiped out the Earth then, they wouldn’t waste their time just abducting two people, much less take them back to their home planet. Maybe the Giygans were under the impression that they and the humans could actually get along, or coexist. That is, until George betrayed them, stole the information and high-tailed it back to Earth, thus re-enraging the Giygans, and instigating a new invasion.

There are many more mysteries of this game, and it would be foolish to attempt to tackle them all at once, so in the words of the great Orc chieftain Thok: “I stop now. Head hurt from write.”
